No Brooms Allowed

I just finished reading ‘The Dip’ by Seth Godin. The Dip, in short, teaches you when to quit and when to stick a tough task out. There are many interesting points that Seth makes throughout the book; however, I would just like to highlight one of those and it involves “coping.”

In psychology, “coping” is the process of managing taxing circumstances, expending effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems, and seeking to master, minimize, reduce or tolerate stress or conflict.

Fighting Words

I could not believe what I just heard:

I was interviewing with a mortgage company for what was to be my first job post-graduate school. The interviewer was reviewing the results of my sales assessment test. He said that I was a “soft closer.”

Having just wrapped up a 16-year football career, beginning in Junior High School and ending in the National Football League, I took great offense to the mention of the word “soft.” I also took offense knowing that I had been the #1 salesperson at a global health & fitness organization before I went back to B-school.
